In an increasingly digital world, it’s easy to assume that business relationships can be built entirely online.
Video calls are quick.
Email is efficient.
LinkedIn makes it easy to connect with almost anyone in the industry.
But there’s a simple truth that still underpins how business really works:
People do business with people.
And trust — the foundation of any long-term business relationship — is much harder to build with someone you’ve never actually met.
Business Is Still a Human Activity
Technology has made communication faster, but it hasn’t changed the fundamental nature of business.
Behind every company are people making decisions, solving problems, and building partnerships.
Trust, credibility, and rapport rarely come from a single email exchange or a short online call. They come from conversations, shared experiences, and getting to know the person behind the job title.
That human connection is what turns a transaction into a relationship.
And relationships are what sustain industries over the long term.
The Changing Nature of Face-to-Face Business
Thirty years ago, meeting customers in person was simply part of the job.
Sales professionals often spent four days a week travelling, visiting customers’ offices and meeting people face-to-face on a regular basis. Relationships were built through repeated visits and ongoing interaction.
Today, that model has largely disappeared.
Travel is less frequent.
Most meetings happen online.
Communication is faster, but often more transactional.
The result is that opportunities to build real interpersonal relationships have become far less common.
Events Are Where the Industry Reconnects
Because day-to-day business is now so heavily digital, industry events have become one of the few places where the sector reconnects in person.
Events allow people to step away from screens and spend time talking properly.
They provide space for:
- conversations that aren’t rushed
- discussions that go beyond the immediate transaction
- meeting people you’ve worked with for years but never met in person
Often the most valuable discussions happen between sessions, over coffee, or during evening networking events.
These moments help build the interpersonal relationships that sit behind successful long-term partnerships.
Trust Is Built Through Familiarity
It’s much easier to trust someone when you’ve met them.
You understand how they think, how they approach problems, and whether your organisations share the same values.
That familiarity builds confidence.
Over time, those connections become the backbone of productive working relationships — the kind where people pick up the phone, share ideas openly, and collaborate to solve problems.
In industries like the IT Lifecycle and electronics circular economy, trusted relationships across the supply chain are critical.
